Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa (BGCAS) proudly celebrated Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month with vibrant activities that honored the culture, history and spirit of the Samoan people. Throughout the month of May, Club youth came together to deepen their connection to their heritage while building a strong sense of identity, pride and belonging.

One of the highlights of the celebration was a series of interactive trivia sessions, where Club members and youth development participants tested their knowledge of American Samoa’s history, traditions and cultural values. Laughter and excitement could be heard throughout the video as youth discovered new facts about their island home, strengthening their appreciation for the richness of Samoan culture. These moments of learning and connection sparked joy, as Club kids lit up with pride when recognizing their shared heritage.

In addition to the trivia sessions, cadets dedicated time and energy to practicing their Siva Samoa performances in preparation for the End of Year Showcase. Each movement and rhythm reflected generations of tradition, storytelling and expression. Through dance, youth not only developed confidence and discipline but also embraced the responsibility of carrying their culture forward.

BGCAS also embraced broader AANHPI Heritage Month themes by incorporating educational discussions, creative projects, and storytelling into programming. Youth explored the cultural richness within Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities while challenging stereotypes and celebrating achievements. These experiences encouraged curiosity, understanding, and respect for cultures beyond their own, preparing them to engage with the world in meaningful ways.

The impact of these celebrations extended far beyond the month itself. By integrating culture into education and career programs, BGCAS helped youth build aspirations for their futures. At the same time, the focus on cultural awareness reinforced good character and leadership skills, empowering youth to lead with pride and purpose.

At BGCAS, AANHPI Heritage Month is more than a celebration, it is a reminder that identity, culture and community are powerful foundations for success. Through every activity, youth were inspired to believe in themselves and their potential, proving once again that great futures truly start here.
