Idaho Youth has a Bright Future Ahead

Samantha Smith - 2008 Idaho State Youth of the Year

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley in Idaho has had much to celebrate since its beginnings in 1945, but it will be difficult to top the latest news.  Samantha Smith from the Lapwai Unit, was chosen as Youth of the Year representing the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis-Clark Valley in January. In February, she became the Idaho Youth of the Year.  Samantha is now busy preparing for the Regional Competition in July.  Just when she thought that life could not get any more exciting, she was selected as a Gates scholar through the Gates Millennium Scholars Program.  This program had over 13,000 applicants, and less than 8% were chosen!  Samantha can attend any U.S. accredited college or university.  In addition to covering the costs of undergraduate study, she is also eligible for the funding of her education through the masters and doctoral levels if she pursues studies in the fields of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science! Samantha’s plan is to focus on engineering or architecture, since according to her, “math and science are my favorite subjects in school.”

Times have not always been so simple or rewarding for Samantha.  She has had to deal with numerous obstacles in her life including alcohol and drug abuse causing upheaval in her family and in her community.  Samantha’s involvement in her Boys & Girls Club has given her the foundation and stability to overcome these obstacles, and become the strong, confident young woman that she is today.  According to David Cole in an article in the Lewiston Tribune, “for the past nine years Smith, who is Nez Perce, has considered the Lapwai Club her second home and a safe haven.”  Samantha made friends and connected with the staff at the Club over her 9 years as a member.  According to Isaac Sisto, Program Director, he has always pushed her to stay focused and avoid drugs and alcohol.  “She didn’t give in to the temptation and get into that stuff.  I always tell her that she can pretty much accomplish anything she wants.”  Jon Evans, CPO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley speaks for all of the community when he says, “We are all very proud of her and know that she has a bright future ahead of her!
